Each year, Rutgers University-Camden hosts an LGBTQIA+ High School Youth Empowerment Summit.
This year the summit will be on June 3rd, 2019 from 8:30am to 2:30pm.
Last year, the LGBTQIA+ High School Youth Summit was a huge success with nearly 200 students attending from nine different schools. The Youth Summit envisions a community in which New Jersey LGBTQIA+ youth feel connected to their peers, supported by adults, and excited about their futures. The daylong event will feature a continental breakfast, lunch, keynote speaker, breakout sessions for students and chaperones, and a resource fair.
The summit enables LGBTQIA+ youth and their allies to create a cohesive, positive peer community and provides opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions about identity development, healthy coping strategies, LGBTQIA+ student life at college, and other relevant topics. A resource fair connects students with agencies in the metro area that offer support and strengthens the partnership between the agencies and school districts.
Additionally, a university/school district-approved youth climate survey is conducted. The data collects baseline information on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth regarding their demographic background, school climate, home environment, support networks, risk behaviors and academic aspirations, which in turn provides critical information needed to serve this vulnerable population.
Students Receive the Following:
3) Ice Cream Social
